The three decade long conflict had damaged both the infrastructure and human resources needed to run the justice system in these provinces.
“Without Justice, there can be no lasting Peace. This simple but fundamental truth is at the core of Germany’s commitment to and support for the Equal Access to Justice programme” said Jens Ploetner, the Ambassador of Germany in Sri Lanka. “Germany is convinced that a strong and independent legal system in the North and East of Sri Lanka is essential for winning peace. Having equal access to justice, irrespective of gender or ethnicity is important if people are to trust the institutions of their state.”
The A2J project aims to strengthen the justice sector in several ways including supporting the establishment of fully functioning courts, training members of the judiciary and other associated legal service providers, focusing on improving access to legal aid and legal literacy for the most vulnerable groups, making the legal system more women and child friendly, enhancing access to justice for all ethnic and religious groups, and promoting facilities for victims and witness protection.
