Biyagama, Gampaha, 7 February 2017 - Deputy Head of Mission Dr. Michael Dohmen visited venues in the Biyagama division, Gampaha district, that had been affected by the floods in May 2016 and where flood relief had been given by Oxfam through funds of the Federal Foreign Office.
Michael Dohmen spoke with Sri Lankans who had received cash grants and disinfection kits. Through this assistance people and their families had been enabled to return to their houses and resume their economic activities. In total 700 families had been provided with cash grants to replace mainly destroyed household equipment. Disinfection kits and “cash for work” ensured the safety and cleanliness after the floods as well as income. Oxfam furthermore helped to clean the wells which had been contaminated and has assisted in drafting the National Toolkit for Dug Well Cleaning by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board which in any future floods will be a helpful tool.
The Foreign Office in total provided financial support of one million Euro for flood and landslide relief efforts in the aftermath of the recent natural disaster. The projects of Oxfam in the districts of Kegalle, Ratnapura, Puttalam, Gampaha, and Colombo we funded with 345.500 Euro. In cooperation with Oxfam measures have been implemented in the fields of water, sanitation, promotion of public health, and restoring livelihoods.
