Federal Republic of Germany granted a donation of Euro 135,000 to support the Emergency Assistance Project in Menik Farm, Vavuniya implemented by Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB.) This will benefit IDPs still remaining in Menik Farm. The German Ambassador Jens Ploetner very much concerned about this group of IDPs as they have no where to go says that they are the most vulnerable and therefore, need to be urgently provided with daily necessities and attention.

A stunning maritime festival on the Baltic coast: in 2010 the Hanse Sail Rostock, which starts this Thursday (August 5), is celebrating its 20th anniversary and presenting more than 200 traditional sailing vessels and museum ships until Sunday. The outstanding showpieces of the international sailing ship festival are the world’s two oldest and largest windjammers still in operation, the “Kruzenshtern” from Kaliningrad (built 1926) and the 89-year-old Russian “Sedov”.

She’s regarded as the great hope of Bayreuth and marks the beginning of a new era in the history of the famous Wagner Festival: Katharina Wagner. At just 32 she jointly heads the world-renowned Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth together with Eva Wagner-Pasquier. The festival, which opened on Sunday (25.7.) for the 99th time, rolled out the red carpet in customary fashion for its many prominent guests.

Forty-five years ago, young Germans were first called upon to participate in a research competition under the motto “We’re Looking for the Researchers of Tomorrow!” – marking the birth of the Young Researchers competition. The aim of the contest is to arouse young Germans’ enthusiasm for science and research and to promote the up-and-coming young scientists and researchers who are so essential to Germany’s future.

According to a survey carried out by the British broadcaster BBC, Germany is held in higher regard than any other of the 28 states featured. It has thus topped the international poll for the second time in a row. 59 per cent of those surveyed believed that Germany’s influence in the world is positive. Germany was regarded particularly positively in France and South Korea.
